WIE / Dress for Success® Program
at EMS 2016 a Huge Smash!
At the 2016 Experiential Marketing Summit in Denver, Colorado, Dress for Success Denver and WIE took the first steps to building a long-lasting partnership that aims to empower women striving to reach economic independence. Our kick-off program and the latest WIE event at EMS, the Work Bag Essentials Build, was a tremendous success.
Following a short keynote presentation, 300 "career bags" were stuffed with daily essentials and motivational elements for women entering the Denver job market. In addition to work bag essential donations by Avon, NYX Cosmetics, Ford, ViaSat and RSNA, a $5000 donation was presented to Guadalope (Pep) Torres, Executive Director of Dress for Success Denver, as a gift toward fundraising efforts.
An Inspiring Keynote
The impact Dress for Success has on women's lives was punctuated in a moving keynote speech by Dress for Success alumni, Kara Burns. By age 15 she was addicted to and selling meth. She was eventually arrested and faced up to 10 years in federal prison. She spent one year in county lock-up awaiting sentencing, during which she became sober and began speaking to groups of young offenders and parole violators. Kara co-wrote a book with a other inmates about making "right" choices.
At sentencing, the judge acknowledged her miraculous life turnaround and the work with other offenders by significantly reducing her sentence. Shortly after being released from federal prison in 2013, Kara found Dress for Success and it changed her life. Today, working as a full-time catering manager, she is 3½ years sober, a testament to her determination–research shows that only 12% of meth addicts ever make it to the 3-year mark. You can watch Kara's amazing story by clicking Keynote above.
